Walk away (and let your brain sift the information)

Here's a technique for (allegedly) thinking soundly about what i would do in a turn that i developed for myself.  Your mileage may vary.

When I get my turn, I go through everything (ships, planets, starbases, battles...mostly battles and ship movements) without
changing anything.   After I get an idea of what happened, I close the game and go do other things (that is, walk away).  After my brain had had time to sort out stuff (consciously and unconsciously), I come back to do my turn.

Sometimes it was only an hour, sometimes it was a day, but it helped me see "the big picture" rather than just reacting to localized activity.
